Is a Shaughnessy Restaurant wedding the same as a VanDusen wedding?
No, and this is the one I’d want you to understand before anything else.
The restaurant sits on the garden grounds with floor to ceiling windows looking straight out into all that green, so from inside the room it really does feel like you’re getting married in a private garden. But the two are separate companies. Their own FAQ says it straight: they can’t offer garden access, and you’d contact VanDusen directly for current rates.
So you can absolutely have both. You just have to book both, and pay for both.
Can you take photos in VanDusen Garden on your wedding day?
Yes, through a separate photo package you buy from VanDusen. The packages available to Shaughnessy couples start at 2:30pm, and if you want in earlier, you set that up with VanDusen yourself. Worth knowing: you’re really only paying for you and your partner, unless you want your bridal party in some of the photos before the ceremony too.
I think it’s worth the money. The garden later in the evening, once the day crowds have cleared out, is one of the quietest and prettiest places I get to shoot in this city. There’s nobody around and it feels like it’s just yours.
Budget for it early instead of leaving it as a maybe. Once your ceremony and dinner are locked in, there isn’t much room left in the evening to squeeze it in.

This is the part couples underestimate, and it’s the one that affects your photos most.
Shaughnessy is a working restaurant that serves lunch and brunch before your wedding, so nobody gets in before 3pm. Setup happens in that first hour, guests arrive at 4pm, and after that everything runs tight to a midnight cutoff. You’re also getting ready somewhere else, so plan for a hotel or a home and a bit of travel in the morning.
Here’s how I’d build it. If your vendor access is 3pm, book the garden package for 2:30pm and do your first look there. That timing lines up almost perfectly. Then get your bridal party photos and as many family photos as you can done before the ceremony, because afterward you’ve only got about 30 minutes outside by the pond for group shots, and that goes quick. Handling it early means you’re not spending cocktail hour rounding up relatives.
There’s also a full day rental if you want the whole building from 11am, somewhere between $3,000 and $8,000 plus tax and gratuity depending on your date. I’d only go for it if you have a lot of decor to set up. The 3pm start is a tight fit, but it works for almost everyone, and that’s money better spent elsewhere.
What is the space actually like to photograph?
Really good, and better than the photos on most listing sites make it look.
The main room has vaulted ceilings with a ton of light coming in from up top, and a wall of glass along the garden side, so for most of the afternoon and early evening you’re working with soft daylight instead of fighting a dark banquet hall. The chandeliers look beautiful on camera. The whole space feels airy and open instead of boxed in, which you don’t usually get in a restaurant this size.
The backdrop behind the sweetheart table, with the string lights and the garden sitting right behind it, is just amazing. It’s one of my favourite reception setups in Vancouver. There’s an outdoor patio too, which gives you somewhere to put people during cocktail hour and somewhere to step out when the room gets warm. The dance floor is a decent size for a room built mostly around dining. And from what I’ve had there, the food is really good, which matters more than people expect when dinner takes up this much of your night.
Who is Shaughnessy right for, and who should look elsewhere?
It’s right for you if you want a garden setting without leaving the city, you’d rather not line up a caterer and a rental company and a bar service separately, and you like the idea of a team that already knows how to set the room and get dinner out on time. Their coordinator handles most of it. The only thing you’re really setting up yourself is the decor, which is a big relief for a lot of couples.
It’s less of a fit if you have a menu you really care about, a family recipe you were hoping to serve, or a wine you were planning to bring. They’re a restaurant, so all the food and beverage comes from them and that part isn’t negotiable. And if your ceremony is the piece you’re most attached to, VanDusen’s own ceremony spaces might suit you better. There’s no reason you can’t do the ceremony in one place and the reception in the other.
One more thing worth planning for is temperature. There’s no air conditioning, just open windows, doors, and ceiling fans. For a July or August wedding with a full room and dancing after dinner, it’s easier to plan around than to be surprised by.
