A Photographer’s Guide
The two Akebono cherry blossom trees on the Minoru Chapel grounds in Richmond are among the largest you’ll find on any wedding venue property in the Lower Mainland. They bloom late March to very early April, they’re a soft light pink, and most couples shooting cherry blossom sessions in Richmond have no idea they exist.
Hi, I’m Tommy, a wedding and couples photographer based in Vancouver. I shot Clara and Victoria here during cherry blossom season, and what surprised me was how many completely different looks you can pull from one small area without moving more than a few hundred metres. This guide covers four distinct photography spots on and around the Minoru Chapel grounds: the Akebono trees and chapel, the front garden beds, the small pond, and the cherry blossom row. Whether you’re planning a ceremony here or just want the cherry blossoms, this is one of Richmond’s most complete and underused blossom locations.

| Spot | Best For | Tommy’s Take |
|---|---|---|
| ↓ The Akebono Trees and Chapel | Blossom portraits with the chapel in the same frame | The trees are large enough to frame with the chapel behind them. Nothing else in Richmond looks like this. |
| ↓ The Front Garden | Colour variety, detail shots, intimate portraits | Multiple flower varieties peak at exactly the same time as the cherry blossoms. Rare to have that in one frame. |
| ↓ The Pond | Koi reflections, variety, a completely different look | The reflection shots look nothing like the blossom portraits. Worth the two-minute walk. |
| ↓ The Cherry Blossom Row | Tunnel effect, walking shots, something unique | My favourite spot on the grounds. The repetitive pattern photographs unlike anything else here. |
The Akebono Trees and Chapel

Tommy’s Thoughts: These two trees are large enough that you can frame both the blossoms and the chapel in the same shot. That combination, soft pink Akebono trees with a chapel built in 1891 behind them, is something you won’t find at Garry Point or anywhere else in Richmond. Clara and Victoria wore black dresses, and the contrast against the light pink was one of those combinations that just works. For tighter, more classic portraits, the arch frames two people cleanly. The bloom window is late March to very early April and it’s short, so having a backup date ready is worth it. Early morning on a weekday gives you the grounds with minimal foot traffic from the surrounding park.

The Front Garden
Tommy’s Thoughts: The four flower beds at the front of the chapel are easy to walk past without stopping, which is a mistake. Multiple varieties bloom at exactly the same time as the Akebono trees, so you can get cherry blossoms and spring flowers in the same frame. Most Richmond blossom locations give you one thing. The front garden gives you several things at once. Stepping back with a longer lens works better here so the blooms fall behind the couple rather than competing with them.

The Pond
Tommy’s Thoughts: The small pond near the chapel gives you reflections and a completely different look from the blossom shots. It’s a short walk from the trees and worth it because the photos look nothing like anything else you’ll get on the grounds that day. Direct overhead light flattens the reflections, so mid-morning works better than midday. If you want variety in your gallery without going to a second location, the pond is the answer.

The Cherry Blossom Row
Tommy’s Thoughts: This is my favourite spot on the grounds and the one most people skip. The row of cherry blossom trees creates an almost enclosed canopy effect, and the repetitive pattern of the trunks and branches makes for images that are visually distinctive from anything else here. It’s also significantly less busy than Garry Point Park and the main Minoru Park blossom areas. On peak bloom weekends it does get some foot traffic, but arriving before 9am usually gives you the row to yourselves.

About The Chapel at Minoru Park
The Chapel at Minoru Park is a working wedding venue inside Richmond’s Minoru Park. Originally built in 1891, it offers ceremony packages ranging from intimate elopements for under 10 guests to outdoor garden weddings of up to 200. If you’re looking for a Richmond wedding venue that puts you inside cherry blossom season rather than just near it, this is one of the few places in the Lower Mainland where the ceremony grounds and the blossom backdrop are the same property.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cherry Blossom Wedding Photos at Minoru Chapel in Richmond

When do the cherry blossoms bloom at Minoru Chapel in Richmond?
The Akebono cherry blossom trees on the Minoru Chapel grounds typically bloom late March to very early April. The exact timing shifts year to year depending on temperature, so checking local blossom reports in the week before your session is worth doing. Peak bloom usually lasts five to ten days. Plan your session date with a backup option ready in case timing runs early or late.
Can I book a wedding ceremony at Minoru Chapel and have cherry blossom photos on the same grounds?
Yes, and that combination is one of the things that makes this venue genuinely unique in Richmond. The chapel offers several ceremony packages, and the Akebono trees, the front garden, the pond, and the blossom row are all on the same property. If your ceremony date lands within the bloom window, the grounds become your portrait location at the same time. Contact the chapel directly to align your date with blossom season.
How busy does Minoru Chapel get during cherry blossom season compared to other Richmond spots?
Much quieter than Garry Point Park or the main Minoru Park blossom areas. Most couples chasing Richmond cherry blossoms head to the larger public locations first. The chapel grounds feel comparatively calm, especially on weekday mornings. The cherry blossom row can get busier on peak bloom weekends, but arriving before 9am typically gives you the space to work without other people in the background.
What should I wear for cherry blossom wedding photos at Minoru Chapel?
Whatever reflects who you actually are. Clara and Victoria wore black dresses, and the contrast against the soft pink Akebono blossoms was striking. Traditional white works beautifully too. The one thing to be thoughtful about is wearing anything that exactly matches the blossoms. Soft pinks can blend into the trees and lose definition in photos, which flattens the image rather than letting both the person and the blossoms read clearly.
Do I need to book the chapel venue to do a photo session on the grounds?
If you’re working in the surrounding Minoru Park area, the public park is accessible without a booking. For sessions that use the chapel exterior, arch, or garden directly, I’d recommend contacting The Chapel at Minoru Park to confirm what’s available and whether a booking or permission is required before your session date.
Is Minoru Chapel a good Richmond wedding venue for couples who want outdoor portraits after the ceremony?
It’s one of the best options in Richmond specifically because the grounds offer multiple distinct photography spots in a compact area. The Akebono trees with the chapel behind them, the front garden, the pond, and the cherry blossom row are all within a short walk of each other. You can get a full range of looks in a single session without leaving the property.

One Last Thing
Most couples I talk to about Richmond cherry blossom sessions have already heard about Garry Point. Minoru Chapel comes up far less often, which is exactly why I want more people to know about it. Two large Akebono trees, a chapel that has been standing since 1891, a garden in full spring bloom, a quiet pond, and a blossom row that photographs like nowhere else in the area. All of it within a few minutes of each other.
If you’re planning a cherry blossom session or a ceremony here and want to talk through timing and what to expect, I’m easy to reach through my contact page.
