A Hidden Navy Base in the Heart of Vancouver
Photographing a wedding at HMCS Discovery was a first for me and honestly such a cool experience. Tucked behind Stanley Park on Deadman’s Island, this place isn’t something you can just stroll into. It’s a private Canadian Navy base, so unless you or someone close to you has served, you’ve probably only ever seen it from across the water. Being there felt like stepping behind the curtain of one of Vancouver’s best kept secrets.

Rolling Up with a TV and a Ton of Heart
Jacquie and Max were waiting at the gate with their arms full including bouquets, decor, a TV and a whole lot of excitement. Once we loaded up and drove over the bridge onto the base it was like the whole city faded away. There was this calmness with trees all around, ocean views, and the Vancouver skyline right across the water. That peaceful tucked away feeling stayed with us the entire day.

Getting Ready in a Room That Just Worked
They turned a basic conference room into the perfect getting ready space. It had this cozy little bar in the corner and enough room for everyone to hang out comfortably. Jacquie’s friends brought all the laughs and her family added so much warmth. That room for a couple of hours felt like the heart of the whole wedding. It didn’t need to be fancy. It just needed to be theirs.

The Ceremony Beside the Water
By the afternoon things settled into that beautiful quiet that always comes right before a ceremony. Jacquie walked with her dad across a grassy stretch overlooking the water. The city shimmered in the background. Max turned around and you could literally see the moment hit him. His vows weren’t rehearsed. They were raw, honest, and full of emotion. You could feel everyone leaning in not just listening but really feeling it with them.

Endless Photo Spots Around the Base
After the ceremony we explored the base for portraits and let me just say this venue is a photographer’s dream. Every corner was different. We had ocean views, forest trails, weathered old buildings, and even a hidden little beach. Every turn gave us something new. The bridal party was all in and brought the energy which made everything feel effortless and fun. We barely had to pose anything. It all unfolded so naturally.

A Reception That Felt Like Home
The reception was held on base and it had that sweet mix of intimate and energetic. The speeches were heartfelt, the music was nostalgic in the best way. I’m talking Sailor Moon and Pokémon on the playlist and their love for anime and gaming was sprinkled throughout the night. It wasn’t about showing off. It was about showing up as their full selves and everyone there embraced it.

Golden Light and a Quiet Beach
Just before sunset we wandered down to the private beach. No crowds. No noise. Just warm golden light and the sound of water. It was calm, surreal, and the perfect closing chapter for the day. We ended with sparklers and a quiet walk back up the trail with the city glowing across the bay.

Why Choose a Wedding at HMCS Discovery
If you have a connection to the Canadian Navy HMCS Discovery is easily one of the most unique and private wedding venues in Vancouver. Here’s why it might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Privacy You Won’t Find Anywhere Else
Because it’s an active naval training base it’s completely closed to the public. That means no strangers walking by, no tourists in the background of your ceremony, and full peace of mind. You’re surrounded by nature, city views, and history without any interruptions.
Scenery That Feels Like a Movie Set
You’ve got oceanfront lawns, towering trees, vintage naval buildings, and even a hidden beach all within walking distance. It’s like a full day photo shoot built into your venue. Whether you want something modern, timeless, or totally unique, you’ll find a backdrop that fits.

Military Heritage with a Natural Twist
There’s something special about the atmosphere here. It blends tradition and history with the calm beauty of Stanley Park. If you or your family have military ties there’s an added layer of meaning that makes everything feel that much deeper.
A Total Hidden Gem in Vancouver
Most people have never even set foot on this island. Hosting your wedding here doesn’t just feel special. It is special. It’s the kind of place that makes people stop and say “Wait where are we” in the best way.
