James & Catherine’s Rooftop Airbnb Wedding in Vancouver

James and Catherine’s wedding was honestly one of the most unique and touching weddings I’ve been lucky enough to document.

They met five years ago in a Vancouver nightclub. A vodka cranberry sparked a conversation that never really ended. A few months later, Catherine flew to Montreal to meet James’s family. That trip was a turning point. They eventually moved in together and welcomed their daughter, Layla, who became the heart of their story—and their wedding day.

Their journey has been full of laughter, long-distance love, and big life milestones. And this wedding reflected all of it. It wasn’t traditional, but it was true to them. Intimate. Warm. Real.

They chose a heritage-style Airbnb tucked away in Vancouver’s Eastside. A spot that felt more like an editorial set than a rental. The rooftop ceremony was classy and personal, with the city skyline behind them and their closest people gathered close. Every single detail was handpicked with love. From the florals to the food, it all came together with the help of both their families and a team of vendors who brought their vision to life.

James and Catherine are both vegan, incredibly thoughtful, and just the kindest people. Seeing guests fly in from all over—Australia, Hong Kong, England, the U.S., and across Canada—just to be there for them said so much. It was such an honour to photograph the quiet moments, the big laughs, and everything in between.

This wasn’t just a wedding. It was a family celebration filled with meaning.

Why You Might Want to Do a Wedding at an Airbnb
There’s something really special about celebrating your wedding in a private home. Catherine and James turned their Airbnb into a full wedding venue. Ceremony upstairs. Dinner setup in the living area. A place for their families to stay. It felt like a weekend getaway right in the heart of Vancouver.
A few pros of an Airbnb wedding
Total creative control
You’re not limited to a venue’s rules. You get to design your own vibe.
Feels personal
You can decorate it how you want and make it completely yours.
Everything in one place
No travel between venues. Everything happens at the same spot.
Family stays on site
It brings everyone closer and simplifies the day.
A few things to consider
It takes more planning
You’ll need to coordinate rentals, deliveries, and setup yourself or through a planner.
City rules matter
Noise bylaws and guest count limits are a thing. Be respectful of the neighbourhood.
Not all Airbnbs allow events
Get approval from the host and consider event insurance just in case.
If you’re looking for something more relaxed, intimate, and intentional, Airbnb weddings are a great fit.
