UBC Botanical Garden Vancouver | Wedding Venue Guide 2026

Right on the UBC campus sits one of Vancouver’s most breathtaking wedding venues. Tall trees. Fresh air. Layers of green everywhere you look. It feels natural and open the moment you walk in.

If you’re drawn to the idea of a ceremony that feels genuinely connected to nature without leaving the city, this is the space I’d point you toward first.

Tommy’s Thoughts on UBC Botanical Garden

UBC Botanical Garden gives you something most Vancouver venues can’t: the feeling of being tucked inside a forest while still being in the city. The ceremony area feels like vows said inside a living forest. The late afternoon light through the canopy is something I genuinely look forward to every time. String lights, dense greenery, and that open-air warmth in the reception space make everything feel intimate without you having to try.

The surrounding campus also gives us real flexibility for portraits. Incredible variety without ever leaving the grounds.

One thing worth mentioning: this is a paid public park, and on a busy summer weekend it can get lively. Your ceremony space is still private, but you’ll be aware there are other people around. It’s never been a dealbreaker in my experience, just something to go in knowing.

The Spaces

Contemporary Lawn and Arbour — Up to 250 guests. Private, romantic, draped in vines. The showpiece of the property. Rates run $2,000 to $5,000 depending on the block.

Reception Centre — Up to 100 guests. Indoor-outdoor mix with views toward the ocean. Rates run $1,750 to $4,000.

Nitobe Memorial Garden — Up to 25 guests. Peaceful and intimate. Best for micro-weddings and elopements. Ceremony starts at $1,400.

Is This Right for You?

Couples who want their wedding to feel grounded and real. You do need to bring your own catering and décor, but the space has so much natural character that overstyling it would actually work against you. If you want a heavily produced event, this one might stretch you. If you want your guests to walk away talking about how it felt, this garden delivers that easily.

The season matters too, and honestly each one suits a different couple.

🌸 Spring is for the romantics. Cherry blossoms along the UBC campus, magnolia and rhododendron opening inside the garden.

☀️ Summer is for couples who want warmth, long golden evenings, and the garden at its most lush. Just go in knowing weekends can be busy.

🍂 Fall is for couples drawn to something more cinematic. Golden and deep red trees, softer light, and a calm quality that photographs beautifully. The 40% venue discount doesn’t hurt either.

🌧️ Rainy days suit couples who aren’t afraid of a little atmosphere. Overcast skies make the greens richer and the light more even. Some of my favourite photos from this venue were taken on grey days.

Planning Tips

Book early, especially for summer weekends. Prime dates go fast, and vendors who already know the space make the day run smoother.

Keep décor minimal. The garden already has so much natural character. Let it do the work.

Plan for late afternoon portraits. The light through the canopy at that hour is genuinely special. Have a rain plan ready too, just in case.

Remind guests it’s an outdoor day. Comfortable shoes, sunscreen, and a light layer go a long way.

Little things matter. Water stations, fans, and snacks during the getting-ready portion keep everyone relaxed and happy.

Visit in person before booking. A quick walk-through tells you more than any photo online ever could.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many guests can UBC Botanical Garden accommodate? The Contemporary Lawn and Arbour fits up to 250, the Amphitheatre fits 225, and the Reception Centre holds up to 100. The Nitobe Memorial Garden is best for 25 or fewer.

Can we do our ceremony and reception both here? Yes. The most popular combination is the Lawn or Amphitheatre for the ceremony, followed by the Reception Centre. Everything is close together and booking multiple spaces comes with a 25% discount.

Is it good for a fall or spring wedding? One of the best choices in Vancouver for both. Spring brings cherry blossoms. Fall turns the trees golden. The 40% discount from October through April makes fall especially worth considering.

Is it right for a micro-wedding or elopement? Absolutely. The Nitobe Memorial Garden is one of the most peaceful small ceremony spaces I’ve photographed in Vancouver. Perfect for 25 guests or fewer.

Do we need a wedding planner? The venue has a professional events team, but since you’re bringing in your own catering and vendors, a day-of coordinator is worth considering for larger guest lists.

The Bottom Line

UBC Botanical Garden is one of those rare venues where the space itself carries a lot of the weight. The lush greenery, the forest light, the open-air warmth of the reception space. It all creates something that feels meaningful without requiring a lot of extra effort to get there.

It’s the right fit for couples who want their wedding to feel connected to nature, genuinely intimate, and full of life. And for photographers, it’s a space I always enjoy. The light here is something special.

If it does rain, I’ll say what I say about every Vancouver outdoor wedding: rain is beautiful. It’s atmospheric, it’s romantic, and some of the most powerful photos I’ve ever taken were on grey days. The weather is never really the problem people think it’ll be.
