Welcome to Posing 101 with Your Vancouver Wedding Photographer
Are you a couple in Vancouver wondering how to feel natural and comfortable in front of the camera for your engagement or wedding photos? You’re not alone. A lot of couples feel a bit awkward when it’s time to pose, but I’m here to help you relax and just be yourselves.
The Story Behind This Posing Guide
This whole thing came together during a trip to Las Vegas. I was grabbing food at a restaurant when I met an amazing couple. I had a photoshoot planned for later that day, but my original couple had to cancel last minute. I asked if they’d be up for a spontaneous shoot and they were totally down. We had such a fun time and made some great photos.
That experience inspired me to make this Posing 101 guide. I included a video from that shoot to show you that you don’t have to be models to look great in front of the camera. It’s all about feeling comfortable and connected.
Posing Tips to Help You Feel Comfortable and Look Natural
As a Vancouver engagement and wedding photographer, I believe the best photos come when you’re genuinely having a good time. These are the same tips I share with all my couples during shoots.
Posing Tips for Men
Stand with your feet slightly apart to show confidence
Keep your back straight and take a breath to settle in
Lean forward just a little to keep things looking flattering
Let your hands rest in your pockets or gently hold your partner’s hand
Posing Tips for Women
Point one foot in to create a more flattering leg shape
Shift your hips slightly to enhance or soften curves
Keep a little space between your arms and your body
Tilt your head toward your partner for a sense of connection
Stand tall and relaxed for an elegant look
Simple Couple Poses That Show Connection
The V-Up Pose
Stand shoulder to shoulder and wrap your arms around each other’s waist. It’s an easy way to feel close and look natural.
The Open Pose
Stand facing slightly away from each other while holding hands. It feels open and relaxed while still keeping you connected.
The Closed Pose
Turn toward each other, bring your bodies and heads close, and add a hand on the waist or shoulder. Try switching it up with your hand placement so it feels real and not stiff.
The Stack Pose
One person stands behind the other with arms wrapped around the waist. Just avoid placing hands on the stomach so the focus stays on your connection.
Why This Helps for Your Engagement Photos
Doing these poses during your engagement session helps you feel more confident in front of the camera. That way, by the time the wedding day comes around, you’ll already know what to do and how to feel relaxed. Everything just flows better and feels more fun.
