Posing Tips to Look Natural & Authentic in Your Vancouver Wedding & Engagement Photos

November 11th, 2024

Welcome to Posing 101 with Your Vancouver Wedding Photographer

Are you a couple in Vancouver wondering how to feel natural and comfortable in front of the camera for your engagement or wedding photos? You're not alone! Many couples feel a bit uneasy when it's time to pose, but I'm here to help you relax and be yourselves.

The Story Behind This Posing Guide

During a recent trip to Las Vegas, I met an amazing couple at a restaurant. I had a photoshoot planned, but my original couple had to cancel last minute. Seizing the opportunity, I invited these two wonderful people for a spontaneous photoshoot, and they were excited to join me!

This experience inspired me to create this Posing 101 guide, featuring a video from our Las Vegas shoot, to help couples like you feel confident in front of the camera.

Posing Tips to Make You Feel Comfortable and Look Natural

As a Vancouver engagement and wedding photographer, I believe that authentic moments are captured when you feel at ease. Here are some foundational poses and tips that I guide all my couples through:

Posing Tips for Men

  • Strong Presence: Stand with a wider stance to convey confidence.
  • Posture Perfection: Keep your back straight and take a deep breath to improve posture.
  • Flattering Angles: Lean forward slightly to avoid parts of the body appearing larger.
  • Natural Hands: Place hands in pockets or gently hold your partner’s hand for a relaxed look.

Posing Tips for Women

  • Elegant Stance: Turn one foot inward to create a tapered leg shape.
  • Highlight Your Curves: Push your hip towards or away from the camera to emphasize or de-emphasize curves.
  • Relaxed Arms: Keep arms slightly away from the body to avoid flattening them against your torso.
  • Connected Feel: Angle your head towards your partner to showcase your connection.
  • Graceful Posture: Stand tall with a straight back for poise and elegance.

Couple Poses to Show Connection

  • The "V-Up" Pose: Stand shoulder-to-shoulder with arms around each other’s waist for a classic, intimate look.
  • Open Pose: Angle slightly out while holding hands to keep things relaxed and open.
  • Closed Pose: Bring your heads and bodies close together, adding a hand on the waist or shoulder. Vary your hand positions for a natural feel.
  • Stack Pose: One person stands behind the other with arms around the waist, avoiding hands on the stomach to keep the focus on your connection.

Why These Poses Matter for Your Engagement Photos

Starting with these basic poses during your engagement shoot helps you become more at ease in front of the camera. By the time your wedding day arrives, you'll feel confident and comfortable, making the photography experience seamless and enjoyable.
