Cherry Blossom Family Photos at Garry Point Park, Richmond with Hoang & Rose

March 29th, 2024

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing Hoang and Rose since their engagement—the very first couple session I ever did! Over the years, it’s been amazing to witness their journey from that initial engagement shoot to their wedding, maternity, and now, this beautiful family session with baby Lincoln. I’m always grateful to be part of their story.

This session was shot at Garry Point Park in Steveston, Richmond, BC, during peak cherry blossom season, which happens to be my absolute favorite time of the year. We arrived shortly after sunrise, just before the park filled with visitors. That early-morning window not only gave us soft, golden light but also a peaceful setting perfect for capturing genuine moments. Even with unpredictable weather and a rain forecast, the skies held off just long enough for us to get all the shots we needed.

There’s something incredibly special about watching a family grow, and photographing baby Lincoln was a real joy. Being able to document these milestones and preserve such precious memories is truly an honor.

Tips for Planning a Cherry Blossom Photo Session at Garry Point Park

If you’re planning your own cherry blossom shoot at Garry Point Park in Richmond, BC, here are a few insider tips to help you make the most of your session:

  • Check the Cherry Blossom Tracker: Timing is everything! Use the Cherry Blossom Tracker to pinpoint when the trees will be in full bloom—usually late March to April, weather permitting.
  • Arrive Early for the Best Light & Fewer Crowds: Sunrise offers soft and golden light making it the perfect time to shoot before the park gets busy.
  • Explore the Far End of the Park: For a quieter setting and a cleaner background, venture to the more secluded areas of the park.
  • Use a Telephoto Lens or Portrait Mode: A telephoto lens (or even your phone’s portrait mode) can compress the background beautifully, keeping distractions at bay.
  • Get Low for a Unique Perspective: Shooting from a low angle fills your frame with those dreamy cherry blossoms and creates immersive portraits.
  • Plan for Parking: Parking can be a challenge during cherry blossom season. If you’re arriving later in the day, consider parking down the street and walking in to avoid the congestion.

If you’re in Richmond, BC, and looking for a stunning spot for your cherry blossom photos, Garry Point Park should definitely be on your list. These breathtaking blossoms only grace us for a short time each year, so planning ahead is key.

From engagement sessions to weddings, and now family portraits, I feel incredibly blessed to capture the moments that define love and life. If you’ve been thinking about booking a cherry blossom session, let’s make it happen! I’d love to help you capture your own beautiful milestones.
